This was the first song of our project, and it was the introduction to Newton’s laments. It has good balance with confession and petition, but some of his phrases here are pure gold: “Make me … free from art,” “pleased with all that pleases thee.” There is an artificial complexity that we can bring to God for the sake of our protection. Our desires are convoluted and corrupt. We need this call that God would reprogram our desires; we need to confess how ungodly and misplaced they can get. But the heart of this hymn is that in our complicated world (“Satan,” “dangers,” “fears”) we desperately need the simplicity of the weaned child’s trust, teachability, and treasuring gaze upon God. That, itself will yield the security, comfort, and life for which we long.
lyrics
Quiet, Lord my froward heart,
Upright simple free from art,
Make me as a weaned child
From distrust and envy free,
Pleased with all that pleases Thee.
Make me teachable and mild,
What thou shalt today provide,
What tomorrow may betide,
Let me as a child receive,
Tis enough that Thou wilt care,
Why should I the burden bear?
Calmly to Thy wisdom leave
As a little child relies
Knows he's neither strong nor wise,
On a care beyond his own;
Let me thus with Thee abide,
As my Father, Guard and Guide
Fears to stir a step alone
Thus preserved from Satan's wiles,
May I live upon Thy smiles,
Safe from dangers, free from fears;
When the sons of God shall prove,
All their Father's boundless love,
Till the promised hour appears
Chorus: Quiet Lord My froward Heart
